John teaches Botany for Gardeners, Agricultural  Systems Thinking and several other sustainability courses at the University of Massachusetts where he serves as faculty coordinator for the undergraduate program in Sustainable Food and Farming in the Stockbridge School of Agriculture.

John was Director of the University of Massachusetts Cooperative Extension System from 1992 to 2000 and Assistant Director of the University of Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station (1989-1992). He has a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island in Botany and an M.S. and Ph.D in Agroecology from Cornell University. He is an avid gardener and raises chickens in his suburban backyard.
